YDive diving club Hong Kong :: Dive Reports

Diving can be quite varied in Hong Kong... Here's a review of some of our latest dives.

September 10, 2006 : Wong Mau Chau

A bit windy out this morning so we opted for a couple of sheltered dives around Crescent Island. The first, on the fish farm reef on Crooked Island and the second, off Wu Pai beach on Crescent Island. We had poor visibility on the first, not surprising given the heavy rain yesterday, but much better on the second. A couple of pictures, courtesy of Angela, shown here. A big welcome to Bill, who had his first dive with the club.

Aug 19, 2006 : Bates Head

It had been a long time since anyone in YDive had paid a visit to this rocky outcrop. Much further south and we could have dropped in on the cement barge wreck! Dive plan basically called for a circumnavigation of the islet. Turned out to be octopus city with pretty good viz to boot. Bruce and James opted to check out the shore line of the mainland but was not impressed. Everybody else stuck to Bates Head for the 2nd dive to harass some more octopus!

August 13, 2006 : Wong Mau Chau

Another spectacular day’s diving on Sunday with the good conditions continuing to hold. A series of dives around Wong Mau Chau with good viz (5m+). We were followed around for the whole of one dive by three juvenile puffer fish one of which was intent on making a meal of Bruce. Shoals of fish, octopus, box fish, trunk fish, a moray eel and a very pretty nudibranch (if you happen to be into sea slugs) – fantastic!

August 12, 2006 : Shek Ng Chau (Beyond Breakers Reef!)

Saturday was originally planned as a quick trip out to test Y1 out following a recent service and to sort out fuel for Sunday’s outing. The weather and conditions were so nice however we couldn’t resist a quick couple of dives. Conditions were awesome – great weather, warm water and good underwater visibility (5m+) even at depth. The highlight was definitely the sighting of a large (1m dia.) jellyfish, by Hans and Bruce, with a colony of fish and several crabs happily living inside.

July 30, 2006 : Crooked & Crescent Island

The hot and sunny weather inspired 7 of us to venture out to the northern edge of our range, where good coral is pretty much guaranteed and bamboo sharks have recently been sighted. Neither island disappointed with several octopus, squid and a seahorse located at crooked island and plenty of scorpion fish, sweetlips and coral at crescent island. Alas, still no bamboo sharks!

21 May 2006 : Hoi Ha Wan

Howling gales and driving rain – the HK Observatory has a lot to answer for…

Anyway, despite the conditions we made it out for a couple of dives in Hoi Ha Wan, one on wreck #7 and one in the Reef Check area.  Encountered some problems with the GPS finding satellite position, so took some time but eventually found the wreck. Unfortunately the vibility was not too good which spoilt the dive somewhat… Moved to the reef check area for the second dive,  the visibility in the shallows proved much better.  James and Bruce found a large pregnant seahorse, males they carry the eggs.

A sample picture from the dive to whet your appetite

Cheers,Gareth.

January 29, 2005 : Dragon's Teeth

Despite a chilly 17 degrees sea, the fabulous 10m to 15m visibility made for an enjoyable afternoons diving. Plenty of smaller fish and this fabulous octopus seen on the dive.
